Upon the death of John VI in 1826, Terceira Island supported Pedro (Brazilian Emperor and oldest son of John VI) for the Portuguese throne in opposition to Miguel who was proclaimed king in 1828. Terceira forces invaded Portugal and defeated Miguel in 1834.
