Before Wizards of the Coast released the Alpha Edition of Magic in 1993, they used Gamma Playtest cards to develop the game

If any player can choose only one creature, that player does so

you can kill your opponent, or kill a blocker by pumping your creature, or (in a multiplayer game) pump an opponents creature so that another opponent dies and just look at that bi creature die at end of turn

But those high price tags can scare many beginner collectors away from the game entirely
