Thats because it was introduced at a time when I was just discovering Marvel Comics, and it felt like an incredibly cool and modern take on Spider-Man, who has since (mostly) maintained a look which more closely resembles the original suit from the 60s
The only way to prevent you from getting your hand completely wrecked is to sideboard in a bunch of creatures (or a bunch of lands, but I dont really see the point of that) or to Thought Erasure or Duress away Distortion, in which case youre playing black and may as well play Thought Distortion yourself and try to wreck their hand instead
